Point-of-sale transactions involve paying at a merchant’s checkout using a card, with the transaction routed through card networks and payment processors to authorize and settle the payment. Because these systems usually support cards tied to the same account networks, you can complete a POS purchase with either a debit card or an ATM card. This reflects how the card and its network access funds at the point of sale, not just online or offline in isolation.

PIN requirements aren’t universal at every POS; some transactions use a PIN, others may use a signature or contactless method depending on the card and terminal. POS transactions are not limited to online purchases, and they almost always involve a payment processor to authorize and settle the payment.
